MCC 2026 Law Changes: The Laminated Bat Era

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced a massive overhaul of the Laws of Cricket, effective October 1, 2026.This update focuses on affordability and modernizing match dynamics.

1. The "Laminated Bat" Revolution (Type D)

Due to the rising cost of English Willow (exceeding 100,000 Rupees), the MCC has approved Laminated Bats for professional use.

  • The Material: These "Type D" bats combine English Willow with cheaper, more sustainable woods.
  • Previous Rule: Formerly permitted only in junior cricket, these are now approved for adult professional play.
  • Performance: They aim to keep quality gear within reach of common players without compromising performance.

2. Key Rule Comparisons

Hit Wicket Regulation

Old Rule Ambiguity existed regarding balance after a shot.

New Rule A batter is out if they hit the stumps while regaining balance after playing a shot. However, if they fall onto stumps due to a collision with a fielder, it is Not Out.

"Bunny Hop" Catches

Old Rule Fielders often parried the ball while jumping in/out of the boundary.

New Rule A fielder airborne from outside the boundary must stay within the boundary during initial contact. They must be wholly inside the field to complete the catch.

Dead Ball Authority

Old Rule Ball was "dead" primarily when in the hands of the keeper or bowler.

New Rule Umpires have increased authority to declare a Dead Ball as soon as they believe there is no further chance of play.

Over Completion

Old Rule Play could be suspended immediately upon a wicket falling late in the day.

New Rule In test cricket, the current over must be completed even if a wicket falls at the scheduled end of play.
